Because half of the planet’s greenhouse gases are produced by the construction and then the heating, cooling, and lighting of buildings, and because the state and several cities in New Mexico have committed to the Architecture 2030 movement – a worldwide effort of monumental scope has begun to change the design of buildings to end this contribution to global warming by the year 2030. In this course you will examine the changes needed in building design and construction, including design exercises. Emphasis will be placed on “green” and sustainable building practices with a special focus on adobe and passive solar construction.
The course provides you with podcast interviews on the above topics with our department chair Quentin Wilson. An online discussion group for interacting with the instructor and fellow students also accompanies the course. An attempt will also be made to include downloadable video demonstrations.
